Self Esteem and the World of Public Education

Remember, in the early 90's, when we did not want to "hurt children's feelings", so we began to have YMCA youth soccer games which ended with Team A score: ___ and Team B score: ___?

This was all done in the name of a child's well being.

Children began to feel good for...nothing.

They did not have to do anything to think they were great.

Now,  in the name of looking good in the eyes of the world, we seem to have changed our minds, at least when it comes to how our country's students score on international tests.

Students and their teachers are castigated in newspapers and on television broadcasts all over the nation.

So much for preserving self-esteem.

America cannot have it both ways.

There is a wise movie quote from Spanglish: "Sometimes low self-esteem is just good common sense."
